One Blazer, Two Ways

Today I wanted to showcase how to style a blazer for work and for a night out! While I’ve always loved dressing up and wore something “work appropriate” almost every day in high school, I feel like several of my college friends are just now delving into the world of professional attire as we start to do interviews, participate in internships, and look for jobs after college. It can be a pain in the butt to buy something you only think you’ll wear for an interview or a job, which is why I want to show all my fellow high school and college gals how to make the most of that blazer for any event.

The Work Outfit

I went to a Catholic high school where we had to dress extra fancy for mass days, and girls had the option of either wearing a dress or a skirt. Or, as my English teacher and cross country coach always loved pointing out, we also had the option to “rock the Hillary Clinton pantsuit.” I knew he always meant it jokingly (I’m sure he assumed, What high school girl would ever wear a pantsuit?) so you can imagine his surprise when I walked up to him in the hallway one mass day in this outfit and declared, “I’m rocking the Hillary Clinton pantsuit!” as I twirled and walked away. He laughed.

Since taking these photos, I have actually decided that the fit and length of these pants are extremely unflattering on me, but I still love the concept of this look. My JCPenney suit has hints of pleather on both pieces that help give it an unexpected and edgy vibe. I paired it with simple black heels, statement earrings, a gorgeous burgundy tie-front blouse, and my absolute favorite purse ever—this Kate Spade handbag! I just feel like a boss lady whenever I carry this purse.

This outfit would be great for an interview or any high-end office job. I was considering working at the Denver Capitol building last summer (before Covid hit), and this outfit would’ve been perfect!

The Night-Out Look

To transition your blazer from day to night, I recommend reaching for fun, metallic accessories. I picked these rose gold sandals, a shiny bag, and a pearl belt. (In fact, you may recognize this outfit—I styled a very similar look a few weeks ago with this pink blazer.) Picking a clutch purse over a handbag also helps draw the distinction between work and play, and adding more dramatic makeup would be a great addition to your night-out look.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to show a little more skin! I chose this black tank to layer underneath the blazer, but it’s very trendy right now to wear a crop top/bralette alone underneath a loose “boyfriend” fit blazer (see here). I’ve even seen people wear a lingerie bodysuit under a blazer if you’re feeling so bold… I can’t say I would recommend it, though.

While I don’t really go out much (yet), I think this look would be super cute for getting drinks with girlfriends once I turn 21. It would be great for any dinner out, really, and swapping out the shoes for flats would easily make this outfit daytime appropriate in a more casual setting. In fact, I’ve worn this blazer with a grey tee and jeans to class before.
