As I talked about in my Halloween costume post, last week I dressed up for Decades Day for my school’s homecoming celebration. I felt ecstatic when the email about the themed days was released—I immediately put aside all my homework and planned my outfits instead. I considered, briefly, that most other students wouldn’t even know about the dress up days because (shocker) they don’t check their emails. Sure enough, I was right. I thought my extravagant 80s attire would be enough of a clue that something was going on—I didn’t just dress like that for no reason. But as I marched into each of my classes and received judgmental stares…I started to feel apprehensive about my costume. But why? Why would I care what other people think? Continue reading

Grieving Someone Who’s Still Alive

I’ve always associated grief with those who have died—a kind of sickening permanence knowing you will never see a person again, share a laugh, or breathe the same air. But I never considered the different kind of heartache that comes with mourning the loss of a living person. Like someone very close to you who moved across the country and “got too busy” to stay in touch. Or a best friend for years who changed so much you didn’t recognize her anymore. Or a romantic significant other with broken hearts on either side, or the worse fate of breaking up while still in love, out of necessity (perhaps the one downside of college). Continue reading

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful, Makeover

I’ve always loved the month of August for one reason: the allure of a back-to-school makeover. Whether on a show like “What Not to Wear” or YouTube videos of drastic bedroom redecorating, I enjoy seeing the magic of change and the fruit of forethought brought to fruition. There’s always something so refreshing about “reinventing” yourself or your look to start a new stage in your life (school year or otherwise). While I’ve never had a transformation quite as fantastic as Mia’s in The Princess Diaries, I do give myself a little makeover near the middle of each August not only to make myself feel the most beautiful and confident, but also to have something to look forward to when school may otherwise be…a dread.
