The Thrifty Six Style Autumn Outerwear

I’m back at it today with another Thrifty Six collaboration, where five other bloggers and I showcase our secondhand style. This month’s theme was chosen by Lucy and is ‘autumn outerwear’. While I have a handful of thrifted blazers and the teal fur coat I wore for January’s Thrifty Six post, I wanted to challenge myself to style a piece I haven’t worn for a collaboration yet. I landed on this funky knitted jacket!

This coat is a hand-me-down from my mom that I found in my grandma’s house several years ago—she used to rock it back in the 80s, hence the shoulder pads! I almost never wear the jacket because the material is kind of scratchy and it’s not very warm, but for some reason I haven’t been able to get rid of it… I still think there’s something oddly stylish about it (yet fuggly at the same time, lol).

I immediately thought about pairing it with this (also secondhand) scarlet jumpsuit that I got at a charity shop in Scotland. I wore a very similar outfit with this coat and my scarlet dress back in 2017, which is why I knew I already liked the color combo. I think the brighter orange pairs really nicely with the muted purples and burgundies of the jacket.

I wasn’t sure if the proportions of the jumpsuit would look funny with the coat, though. This is one of those outfits where I had to stare in the mirror for a long time and play around with lots of accessories before landing on the ensemble in today’s post. I tried on a few pairs of shoes, but I knew these brown mid-calf heels would have to be it. They add a trendiness to the look and somehow make the outfit more proportional (even though it seems counterintuitive to pair taller shoes with longer pants, since that means showcasing even less leg). I think normal ankle booties would have for sure made me look like an Oompa Loompa.

I also added a (thrifted) belt over the jumpsuit to give it a little more shape, especially because the jacket is already oversized. I topped the outfit off with my rose gold Kendra Scott necklace, a rusty colored lipstick, dangly green clip-on earrings, and oversized sunglasses (which add to the chic vibe but were really just designed to cover my non-made-up eyes). I think I would have preferred this outfit with my hair down, but like the boots, the slicked back low bun adds an element of trendiness.

This outfit is very “out there” for me, but I think I love how it came together! It feels high fashion even though everything but the boots are secondhand. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this look (too weird or super chic?), and be sure to check out my thrifty friends’ autumn outwear posts at the links below.

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style:

“The gorgeous leopard print trench coat that I bought last winter on Vinted. And that I never had worn because it was too cold in the winter. And as soon as the sun starts to shine in spring, I wear my denim jacket with leopard print scarf. I only had worn it twice this autumn, so I kind of forgot about it. But it is such a treasure, I adore this coat!”

Lucy of Lucy Bertoldi:

“I snatched this plaid pre-loved fall coat at my nearby Village des Valeurs – I just love to go peek in there regularly. When I spot out a gem, I grab it immediately before another style savvy fashionista gets her eye on it! Such purchases have me never looking back; just like with this one that I wear on the repeat.”

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge:

“I found this classic Talbots trench coat at my local Salvation Army many years ago. I think I paid $18 for it and it has proven to be such a versatile coat for both fall and spring. The light taupe color goes with everything and the loose fit makes it work if I gain or lose 25 pounds! It isn’t the most exciting coat, but it is perfect for statement dresses like this newly thrifted Zara dress that I have been dying to share!”

Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade:

“This is my Autumn statement… and what a statement it is! Scarlet red faux fur can’t fail to turn heads. Autumn outerwear is October’s Thrifty Six theme… not sure this meets the brief but it’s what I’ll be rocking this Autumn!”

Emma of Style Splash:

“I have so many pre-loved coats and jackets but this is one that I wear frequently. I bought it on eBay a couple of years ago (it’s from Asos originally). The rich golden colour goes with so many outfits. Here, I’ve teamed it with a thrifted turquoise sweater (also from eBay) and bright blue trousers for contrast.”

. . . . .

Hope you’re having a great Monday!

  1. Grace, that jacket is fabulous! I am drawn to it in the same way you are. It’s kinda fugly but like the really, really good kind. The kind that makes me say, “I want that.” It looks great over the orange jumpsuit and you definitely landed on the right accessories, too. I love this whole look on you! Well done!
