Ringing in The New Year with The Thrifty Six

It was my turn to pick a theme for this month’s Thrifty Six collaboration, and it seemed only natural to do New Year’s Eve outfits! (I picked holiday red as last year’s December theme.) While I knew right away that I wanted to come up with a glitzy thrifted look to ring in the new year, I didn’t have a specific outfit in mind when I declared the theme. I ultimately landed on this blue velvet dress again!

There were three outfits I was toying around with for today’s post. The first look was basically what I wore line dancing last Saturday night, seen in this post: a thrifted velvet slip dress with a black pleather jacket and the same bedazzled fishnet tights from today’s outfit. That was the mildest NYE look of the three but probably also the most practical, as I usually don’t have any big plans for the night that require an over-the-top sequin dress.

The second look was a classier NYE outfit, consisting of the thrifted black fringe dress from this post layered underneath my red sequin moto jacket. I liked this outfit because it seemed unique and out-there, yet still very classy. A contender for future New Year’s Eve looks, for sure.

Lastly, I was contemplating styling this blue dress again. Last time I wore it on the blog was also for a Thrifty Six collaboration where the theme was velvet (although the ombre velvet slip dress mentioned earlier that I just purchased a few weeks ago would have been way better for that theme). I wondered if it was frowned upon to recycle a piece I had already worn for the Thrifty Six, but then I remembered that is the whole point of this group! To showcase secondhand style and how to re-wear pieces.

I mentioned back in that post how I thought this dress would be perfect for New Year’s Eve, mostly because it is long-sleeved. I have plenty of pretty dresses that I would love to dance the night away in, but they are too impractical for the dead of winter! At least this blue dress covers my arms and provides a little bit of warmth on its own, without having to cover it up with a bulky coat.

To switch up the styling, I knew right away I would have to wear my hair down instead of in the sleek low bun from before. I also decided to add these bedazzled fishnet tights that I purchased for my showgirl Halloween costume. I think they are such a fun addition to the outfit! I borrowed these big dangly hoops from my mom, although the drama of them unfortunately got lost in all my hair. I should’ve swapped the earrings between these two looks—the big hoops would’ve looked better with the low bun from the last time I wore this dress.

When playing dress-up in my closet to put these outfits together, I quickly realized I am lacking in the winter shoe department. I love my silver block heel sandals and wear them all the time for fancy events in the spring/summer, but I need a good closed-toe alternative for my fancy winter outfits. I have added it to my list for the next time I go shoe shopping (perhaps I should get some of those fun glittery booties?!).

To spice up these boring black heels, I decided to add black pom pom shoe clips to match my feathery thrifted purse. I love how this outfit came together, and I always feel so spicy in this dress! Which styling do you prefer—the way I wore the dress today or the way I wore it in this post? Either way, I hope I get to break out this baby at a cool bar in Las Vegas when I’m there for New Year’s. We shall see.

“The parties may be canceled again but that won’t stop me wearing sequins! For a more comfortable New Year’s Eve outfit I’ve layered a multi-coloured sequin jacket that I bought on eBay over a sparkly jumper (also secondhand) and velvet trousers. It’s cozy and warm but has plenty of sparkle and shine to see in the New Year!”
