It’s already time for another Thrifty Six collaboration! Once a month, five other bloggers and I collaborate to showcase our thrifted outfits to encourage secondhand shopping. This month’s theme was ‘creative coverups’, so we had a lot of options with our outfits, ranging from kimonos to jackets to scarves, like in my look.

Just like last month, I really struggled with July’s theme. I have no cute coverups or kimonos, let alone any coverups that are thrifted. And while I have a few secondhand blazers and jackets, it’s still wayyy too hot out to rock those pieces in the middle of the summer. I reached for this pretty blue scarf, which my grandmother handed down to me, and started playing around with it.

It was one of those situations where I tried on a ton of different outfits and ended up with clothes and accessories scattered all across the floor of my bedroom… you know how it is. I tried wearing the scarf tied over my sunglasses and head like a 1950s woman riding in the back of a convertible, but it felt too costumey. Then I tried rocking the scarf as a wrap top (that criss-cross bra-look that’s oh-so-trendy right now?) but I definitely looked too trashy in that. So I finally landed on this white dress with the scarf draped over top—hanging, wrapped around my shoulders, blowing in the breeze, whatever.

At first I was skeptical about this outfit, but as I took these pictures, I realized I loved the look. The big sunglasses, the vintage sparkly earrings, the slicked-back bun, and the flowniess of the scarf came together to give me alllll the glamorous movie star vibes. I also thought this look was slightly beachy, and I think it would be the perfect outfit for either an outdoor brunch in the city or a late-night dinner by the water.

What do you think of this outfit? Glamorous or too ‘out there’? Be sure to check out all my blogger friends’ posts below. It’s fun to see how differently we all interpreted the creative coverups theme!

Emma of Style Splash:

“I found this jacket in a charity shop, and although I already own several black jackets, I couldn’t resist this one with the cute flower buttons. It’s from Marks & Spencer and was only a few pounds. I paired it with yellow trousers to match the buttons. The black vest underneath is also from a charity shop. The bag was a gift from my stepmother – she found it in her shop in Madeira.”

Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade:

“Hidden in plain sight… We’ve come a long way since the bathing machines of the late 19th and early 20th century… yet many of us still feel naked and somewhat vulnerable in a swimsuit. Do you reach for cover when you rise from your lounger, or emerge from the pool? Typical beach cover-ups are completely sheer and offer little or no visual barrier to protect our modesty… But they’re a holiday essential – suitcase never to be zipped without that brightly coloured veil of gossamer. Here I am in just one of my scarcely there wisps of fabric – this one scarlet with white polka-dots to match my bathing suit – how cute!!! It must be psychological, a chiffon comfort blanket if you will… We’re still visible, flesh is on show, we think we’re hidden but the reality is, we’re in plain sight!!!”

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge:

“You all know that I am a huge fan of kimonos, but they are scarce items in second hand shops. I rarely ever find kimonos of any sort. So I was really excited when I was thrift shopping with my sister back in February and I found this amazing mossy green polka dotted kimono for just $3. I paired it with an old ivory romper and some funky green wedges for a sassy second hand summer look.”

Lucy of Lucy Bertoldi:

“I love Cover-Ups and I cannot lie! Especially when they come in the form of vintage dusters! After rummaging my wardrobe to find the right piece to style up for this month’s theme – I noticed that this duster collection of mine is slowly taking over in containing my funnest go-to styling pieces. This one’s from the 50s and way too cute to save for the bedroom – seriously though.”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style:

“Well, this was a hard one for me as I am not a fan of kimonos or ponchos. But a cover up can also mean a jacket right? And the creative part is mixing three prints! The jacket is pre loved, was part of a skirt suit. I love the huge buttons and the short sleeves, and the print, pied de poulle, has always been my favorite! Ever since I saw my grandmother, when I was about 7, wearing a pied de poulle coat! So elegant. She wore patent black pumps underneath with a bow! Perfection!”

Thanks for stopping by the blog today, and I hope you have a great start to your week!

  1. It is not out there- you’re absolutely breathtaking!!! I love this chic, laisse-faire cover-up- it’s divine! Love how we all have different takes on cover-ups and all so beautiful! Have a great week xx

  2. I love that you went for a scarf as your creative cover up! You clever, girl! It is such a gorgeous scarf, too. How wonderful that it was your grandmother’s. And you definitely have some serious movie star glam in this outfit! I love your LWD and all the fun pattern mixing with blues and whites. So pretty!

  3. It’s definitely NOT too out there. It may feel different just because that’s not how you normally wear the scarf, but it’s absolutely wonderful Grace. Heck, I’ve really used it around my arms like that in a restaurant when you need a little warmth, but don’t want to cover up the beautiful outfit!!
