4th-of-july-food-homemade-edible-arrangement-red-white-and-blue-strawberries

Happy 4th of July! How cute is this ‘edible arrangement’ I made this morning? I found it on Pinterest years ago and made it for a 4th of July sleepover I hosted in grade school, but I thought it would be fun to make it again this year. I spent the first half of this week tackling my long to-do list and logging lots of hours for my research assistant position, but the second half of the week was jam-packed with fun. My mom finally got back into town, and my grandpa and other brother are visiting! It’s so nice to have the whole gang back together after nearly a year of not seeing my big bro. Now—onto the outfits! I noticed that I wore a lot of turquoise and orange this week, the slightly less popular alternative to the quintessential blue and red that’s so popular this weekend.

I wrote my blog post first thing before working for most of the day. My dad, brother, and I ate dinner outside (in the sweltering heat, I might add) and chit-chatted for a while before my dad and I went inside to watch a movie. I thought the pattern mixing of this black and white top and the boho printed shorts would be cute (like this outfit from my first year of blogging), but the combo just didn’t work—too busy for me. But hey, it’s good to try new outfit combos, right? Even when they don’t turn out.

I didn’t do much today except for logging some hours for my research assistant position. For those of you who don’t know, I work for one of my professors on a project about mass incarceration where we analyze efforts to reduce the prison population in certain states from the year 2000 to the present. Pretty interesting stuff! After dinner, I had a Zoom date with my friend where we caught up for a bit, and then my dad and I went on a walk around the neighborhood. I spent today trying to remember if I’ve had this dress since grade school… I’ve at least had it since middle school. It’s stretched out a lot over the years so it’s never gotten too short! In fact, now I think it’s so stretched that it’s actually too long for my liking. Ah well.

My dad and I decided to play tennis this morning in the 95-degree heat—great idea, huh? We survived without a heat stroke, and I spent the afternoon working. After dinner, I took these blog pics and just *barely* escaped getting drenched by the sprinklers in our yard. For those who have been wondering how I did this hairstyle, I tied off small sections of my pigtails (as if I was doing bubble braids), used my fingers to pull open the sections slightly, and pulled the whole pigtail through to create that twisty look for each section. Not sure if that makes sense at all but eh, there you have it.

I had to wake up at 6:30 this morning to get to my 8am dentist appointment, and while I’m not usually one to mind an early wakeup call, this one was a little rough. After my teeth were squeaky clean, I ran a few errands, finished my blog post, and got to work before a Zoom meeting with my boss. I spent the afternoon doing chores to pass the time before my mom got back into town with my grandpa! It was so fun catching up with them and playing our favorite card game, Euchre. I don’t have a ton of red and blue to wear this week so instead I rocked some orange and blue—this tank and skirt has been one of my favorite summer combos for years. Although my slicked back bun doesn’t look nearly as cute in this photo than I thought it did in person… And the orange looks more red in this pic!

My mom and I went to David’s Bridal first thing this morning. I went with my aunt a few weeks ago when I was in Denver, but the store didn’t have the bridesmaid dress I wanted in my size. I was hopeful Boise’s store would have the right size so I could try the dress on before purchasing. However, I ended up finding a different gown that I liked better and bought it right then! Afterwards, my mom, dad, grandpa, and I drove an hour to the Bogus Basin ski resort for a casual lunch on the mountain. We spent the afternoon playing Euchre before heading out to Melba, Idaho, to our family friend’s bar. He had a singer/comedian playing out back who was absolutely hilarious, singing his own songs and parodies he had written of popular songs. Afterwards, we watched the bar owner’s firework show in the parking lot, which was absolutely incredible! I’ve never sat right below the fireworks but it was awesome. Such a fun night and a great way to kick off the weekend.

I wore this red and blue tie-dye shirt that I made with my mom last summer during quarantine. It’s a lot cuter in person, I think. Also, I absolutely love how my hair turned out today! I French braided it down to the nape of my neck and then tied it in two buns. It’s been so hot recently that I’ve been experimenting with cute new hairstyles to keep my hair up and off my neck.

We had a lazy morning before heading to the airport to pick up my brother, whom I haven’t seen since August. Back at the house, we feasted on leftovers for lunch and then lounged around and played Euchre. We had a big family dinner and opened Father’s Day presents (we postponed the holiday until my two brothers and I were finally together again) before playing more Euchre and watching some fireworks from our deck.

. . . . .

I hope you have a fun and safe holiday today if you’re celebrating! Our friends are coming over this morning for a brunch and Euchre match, and then I think we’ll be heading to another friend’s house for fireworks later tonight. I’m just wearing a blue star-print tee today with denim shorts. Let me know which of this week’s outfits was your favorite in the comments below, and have a great Sunday.

  1. Sounds like you had a fun week, Grace 🙂 As I’ve never heard about Euchre before, I had to google to find out the rules for this game. It certainly appears to be a very social game that’s easy to learn. Happy 4th Of July 🙂 Aiva xxx
