Red-y for the Holidays

Today I’m teaming up with the five other bloggers of the Thrifty Six to showcase our red thrifted items for the holiday season! It was my turn to choose this month’s theme, and I figured “red” would be a fun choice for the holidays since we already did sparkles last month. Plus, I’ll take any excuse to wear this gorgeous dress!

If it were a normal holiday season and I had an event to attend (not that that happens often, even in a non-Covid year), this red thrifted dress would probably be my top choice. I purchased it last Christmastime at a thrift store in Las Vegas for only $1! Can you believe it?? I featured the dress, along with several other $1 dresses, in my thrift shopping haul blog post, and I did a little research to discover that this dress is the brand BCBG Max Azria, originally retailing for over $200. Such a steal!

I admittedly don’t have as many thrifted items as some of the other bloggers in this group, so I was very excited to realize that more than one piece in this outfit is second-hand—my red beaded purse was $6 from the same thrift store as the dress (funny that a purse cost more than the clothing!) and my sparkly necklace was an antique store find. It’s extremely sparkly and could pass as real diamonds, in my opinion, so I feel like royalty when I wear it.

I finished the look with basic black heels that I bedazzled with sparkly shoe clips. Thankfully I took these photos in Las Vegas where it’s a little warmer, but this outfit would look extremely pretty with a white faux fur stole or coat if you live in a colder climate. I noticed after looking through these pics that the dress actually has a small stain on the front (I imagine that’s why it ended up at the thrift store in the first place), but it’s hardly noticeable. I can’t wait until I get to wear this dress out and about in the “real world” to some fancy event!

Be sure to check out how the other five ladies styled red this month by clicking the links below. I love seeing everyone’s different interpretations of the red theme, especially Nancy’s!

Emma of Style Splash

“I came across this gorgeous red military style jacket on eBay recently. I was the only bidder so I managed to snag it for the starting price of £5! The quality is fantastic, much better than I’d anticipated. I teamed it with a zebra print mini skirt and long black boots to make the red really stand out.”

Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade

“I’m Little Red Riding Hood…lost in the forest on my way to grandmother’s house…only kidding – it’s me, Jane! Red’s the theme for the Thrifty Six December style focus and I’m taking it to the max! This is an authentic Scandinavian, pure wool maxi skirt, I’ve teamed it with a chunky pillarbox red sweater and a quirky vermilion beret. The accent colour is tan, a great contrast to the red and it picks up the orangey stitch detail in the skirt. Dressed head to toe in red I feel totally empowered! – I don’t often wear this colour but now I’m tempted to become a ‘Scarlet Woman’!!!”

Lucy of Confessions of a Montreal Styling Diva

“And here we are, The Thrifty Six, with such an appropriate theme for Christmas: Red! I had such a blast putting together this gorgeous thrifted ensemble. There’s nothing I love more than an easy right off the rack outfit that says: Ready to Go! I paired it with my all time favourite sequin vest…and then opted for the two- different-coloured booties!  A true mish-mash that speaks originality- just like I love!”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style

“Nothing I am wearing here is pre loved. When this photo was taken, about 5 years ago, I wasn’t into pre loved. But……Castor was pre loved!! We bought him, that sounds weird, we were so lucky to call him ours, also weird but alla, from a breeder. Who, of course otherwise we wouldn’t have ended up at her place, loved her cats to pieces. So this is my pre loved ‘item’! Castor! Yeah right, but he is not red, I hear you say. No indeed, I am a bit cheating this month. But he does wear a red Santa jacket which I got from a friend years ago. So a pre loved cat with a hand me down jacket!”

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

“I recently found this red tartan blazer at my local Thrifty Shopper and it was so perfect for the holiday season that I just couldn’t resist it. Although I had absolutely no reason for purchasing it other than I thought it was so cute…until Grace called Red for this month’s theme! My Harley Davidson tank top, my jeans, and a few of my pearl strands were also preloved items purchased a few years ago. Everything else was shopped from my closet. This combination was inspired by a Gwen Stefani outfit that she was wearing recently on The Voice!”

As always, thanks for stopping by today. Do you plan on getting dressed up for Christmas this year if you’re celebrating? Or will you just chill out in your PJs? I’ll probably do the latter—I almost never get dressed on the holiday as it is.

Hope you have a great Monday! (I still can’t believe Christmas is this week.)

Miles of smiles,

Grace

  1. Grace, my beautiful friend, you are stunning! Red is such a fabulous color on you, too! And what an amazing thrifty find. I love the purse and necklace, too! This was the perfect theme for December! And no worries about not having a ton of preloved wardrobe pieces. Eventually you build up quite a stock when you have been thrifting for as long as I have (which is well over 30 years). My Christmas Day outfit will most likely be super comfy and casual as well! I hope you have the most amazing Christmas!
