The Best and Worst Fall Fashion Trends

I wrote a post like this back during the summertime, and it was such a hit that I figured I better do it again for the fall season! And since it’s late while I’m writing this and I still have homework left to do (eek), let’s get right down to it. Here are the best and worst fashion trends for this season, according to yours truly!

Best Trend: Statement Sleeves

I mentioned puff sleeves in the summer edition of this post, and the statement and bishop sleeves are still going strong as we enter the fall. I like this trend for the most part, but some puffy sleeves are a little too much for me… like a mix of “pirate” and “Little House on the Prairie.” But of course I love the sleeves on my own top today—they remind me of Shakespeare times/a jester!

Best Trend: Square Necklines

I think the square neckline trend is so flattering and cool-looking. Not to mention, it’s just really unique! But, I do fear the practicality of it, as it might be difficult to wear a normal bra with some square-neck tops.

Best Trend: Snakeskin Booties

This trend isn’t new, but the snakeskin booties have really gotten out of control this fall, in the best sort of way! I think they’re so cute and would love to get my hands on a pair. Although, I much prefer the ones with white/grey tones so that they look a little less snake-like…

Best Trend: Wrap-Style Mini Skirts

I noticed this over the summer too, but wrap-style skirts have been super in lately, and I think they’re so cute. They would look particularly stylish with over-the-knee boots and a cropped sweater for fall.

Best Trend: Wide Brim Hats

Another trend that I’ve been seeing everywhere! While I love the look of these hats, I don’t know how practical they are… Wearing a big hat seems silly while going about your everyday tasks, and it seems even sillier while stuck at home! But hey, if you wanna rock a big hat to your next Zoom meeting, don’t let me stop you.

Best Trend: Straight Leg Jeans

You guys… I think skinny jeans are almost dead! But I’ve known that my denim collection has been needing a refresh for quite some time now, considering all the jeans I own are both skinny and medium-waisted (I seriously need some high-waisted pairs). But anyway, I’m here for the straight leg or cropped flared fit, if done right!

Worst Trend: Shoulder Pads

Okay… I can get on board with slight shoulder pads in certain instances, like in a blazer. But if it’s super obvious that you have big cushions shoved in the top of your shirt? Especially a t-shirt? I don’t know, it’s just too much for me.

Worst Trend: Prairie Tops/Dresses

Eek, the combination of high necks, ruffles on the chest, and poofy sleeves, especially in a tiny floral pattern, is not my favorite. What do you think?

Worst Trend: Baby Doll Dresses

To be fair, I think baby doll dresses are super cute. But I just think the fit is unflattering on the majority of people (don’t they call it baby doll because it looks like you’re hiding a pregnant belly under the fabric? No?). The combination of a loose fit with a seam right below the bust does not do wonders for me.

Worst Trend: Butterfly Embroidery

Why did it become a thing near the end of the summer to wear tiny t-shirts and dresses that have a little butterfly embroidered in the center? Are we kindergartners in the 90s? No, I thought not. This is really the only bad trend I feel very strongly about this season. Hopefully it dies out as a summer trend and doesn’t really continue into the fall.

Worst Trend: Collared Sweaters

I don’t know what it is about this trend, but I just don’t think collared sweaters are cute. Is it just me? Maybe it’s because they remind me of a creepy teacher I had in high school who always wore collared sweaters from the 70s (you know, the kind that are extremely pointy). But anyway, here’s an example, if you don’t know what I’m talking about.

And that’s a wrap! What trends have you been loving and hating this season? Think I’ve got some of these wrong? Would love to hear your thoughts below. To be honest, I haven’t seen that many trends that I really don’t like this season. Most of them are super cute!

Anyway, hope y’all have a great Thursday.

Miles of smiles,

Grace

  1. I’m with you on most of these trends but I kinda like the shoulder pads. I think a subtle shoulder pad looks really chic. But I do feel like I could hate this trend in a few months lol

    1. Haha yes I agree, I can get on a board with a little shoulder pad, but it quickly turns into too much…

  2. Well, I already have quarterback shoulders. Need I say more? I actually agree with you on the whole kit and kaboodle. My fall capsule is really super practical though, with no thought given to trends. Now I want to take your list and compare it to my capsule to see if I’ve got any of the trends present.

    1. I don’t usually give any thought to trends, either! By the time I decide I really like a trend and want to buy an item, it’s already out of style… So I never end up getting anything. But it is always fun to look in our closets and see if we have anything!

    1. For sure! It’s so much easier that way. Usually by the time I decide I like a trend, it’s already gone out of style! Ha.

  3. I agree about the prairie dresses. I’ve been around long enough to see them come and go a couple times. They’ve never worked for me! Your top and jeans outfit is super cute and just the right look on you.

    1. Thanks so much, Darlene! It’s so funny to see how certain trends come back over time. Hope your week is off to a great start!

  4. Grace, this was fun to read! It makes me laugh how certain trends appeal to certain people while others are just a big fat NO! Other than shoulder pads, I am okay with all of your worst trends. Haha. I also am good with all of your best trends, too. But I can’t do the giant puffy sleeves especially if the puffiness is around the shoulder area. Not good for me! In any event, I love your outfit here and that top is super cute! Thanks for linking with me!

    1. Thanks so much, Shelbee! Haha I know, it is fun to see how different people feel about things. And I agree, I’m not a fan of the sleeves when they get too puffy!

  5. Great topic for a post. I’m with you on all the good trends, except maybe the wrap style mini skirts. They look great on most, not on me. I must confess I like the shoulder pads. I guess I experienced them first time round! Thanks for joining #WowOnWednesday.

    1. Thanks Gail! I think I could get on board with the shoulder pads… just as long as they don’t get too out of hand, haha.
