Apartment Bedroom Tour (Help Wanted!)

Today I’m finally sharing my apartment bedroom tour! I’ve had a few people ask me if and when this blog post would be going live, so I’m glad you all are as excited about room décor as I am. I really wanted to switch up my décor this year (I’m ready for something a little more sophisticated and a change in color scheme), but I ultimately decided to stay with my classic blue… It makes more sense to me to save the money now and wait to overhaul my decorations until I move into a more permanent apartment after graduation. But with that said, I still feel that my room is lacking a couple of pieces—that’s where you come in!

I thought I wanted to have a more “minimalist” bedroom this year, but it just feels so empty. However, I do usually go overkill with decorations… So that’s why I need your help. Throughout today’s post, I’m posing questions underlined and in bold to get your feedback on how I should finish the room. There’s four in total, so let me know what you think I should do in the comments at the end of this post. I’m looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Since I’m not living in a dorm this year, I had to furnish my own bedroom… Which meant, naturally, that I stole the bed and bedframe from my brother’s room, and I stole the navy chair from my other brother’s room. It was weird not automatically having the desk and dresser that usually comes in a dorm room, but I got a lil’ creative instead, using my Bed, Bath, & Beyond storage cart as a nightstand (I highly recommend the cart, by the way) and a metal rack as my dresser. After much deliberation, I decided to forgo a desk to prevent the room from feeling too squished (plus, there’s a built-in desk in the apartment common area).

1. Should I put something on this wall behind my bed??

This wall seems pretty blank… I still have these pom pom strands from last year’s bedroom, so I could hang five of them behind the bed to create the illusion of an extended headboard. OR I could make a framed picture display, like this one. Thoughts?

2. Should I make better use of the nifty ledge next to my bed?

I really like having this cool little shelf on the wall next to my bed. But I kind of feel like I’m not taking full advantage of it… Any fun ideas for what I should do with it? Or should I just leave it as-is?

3. Should I put something on the back wall between the door and the wall with my mirror?

Again, I could do something with the pom pom strands. Or I could do a collage of printed photos. Or I could do something totally different! I’m open to suggestions.

I was so proud of how my gallery wall turned out, thanks to a variety of Command products. Two of the pieces were made for me by my high school friend, I made the wooden mandala with a wood burning tool, the Puerto Rico heart flag was a gift, and the cute polka dot frame is from Pier One (the frame would make a super easy DIY project).

Love a good paint chip mural as cheap decorations! I decided to make it ombre this year, and I think it looks great on the cement support beam as a statement accent wall.

4. Should I get a small area rug for the center of the room?

I didn’t get a great pic of the empty space in the middle of the room, but I’m kinda thinking a rectangular rug coming diagonally from the bed would really tie the bedroom together. It would probably be a grey pattern/neutral colors so that I could use it in future apartments as well.

Is this baby orchid not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?? I love the way it looks on my adorable $15 elephant table!

I love displaying my collection of fancy Papyrus cards on a strand of string lights. If only you could see them in person… They’re so bedazzled and absolutely fabulous. The collection is probably my favorite decoration!

And then of course, there’s my closet. It’s ginormous—way more space than I need, especially since I brought so few clothes this year. But I’m certain I would be able to fit my entire closet from home into this space! Check out the pic below to see how deep the closet goes.

While my room gets amazing natural light during the day (although not-so-amazing light for my outfit-of-the-day videos), there are NO overhead lights in this room. Not one. It’s like a hotel room. So once the sun sets, this is about as bright as my bedroom gets… Hence the clip-on lamp in my blue study chair. It definitely incentivizes me to get work done early!

So what do you think of my room?? Cute? Does it need more decorations? Or would more be overkill? Would love to hear your thoughts. You can see how I styled all these same decorations in my sophomore year dorm room and my freshman year dorm room. You can also follow along on Pinterest for more décor ideas.

Thanks for stopping by today, and have a great Thursday! Thank goodness we’re almost to the end of the week.

Miles of smiles,

Grace

  1. Hey girl! Your apartment is so cute!! I love the blue theme and also, I think it would be neat if you put a print or tan hanging tribal tapestry thing above your bed. I just moved into my college apartment and need help decorating as well LOL it can be tricky. Love this post and hope you’re doing well!

    1. Thanks Emily!! Okay yes I can totally see it… I was sort of thinking one of those trendy hanging tapestry things, too! What colors are you doing for your room? I hope you do a post when you finish it! And yes you too, hope all is well at school. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  2. So fun to have this blank canvas! The ledge would be a great ledge for frames (I am thinking wood with sayings, you could even diy them if you know someone with a cricut machine) or metal with words (I love anything farmhouse..). Loving your stringed lights! A neutral rug would be cool: now not sure if you have an Aldi nearby and when they would have their large rugs again but one year I got a large grey/beige/blue abstract rug for less than $20. It was great quality, I ended up giving it to my friends since we didn’t need it at this house. And the wood and paint chips decor: genius!

    1. Thanks for all the tips, Mireille! What a steal for a rug, some of them can get so expensive! And oooh some wood sayings could be super cool… I’m definitely in the mood to get crafty now!

  3. Wow, your room looks amazing and I just love your elephant blanket, it’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!

Yes, the wall behind your bed looks empty. You can always get inexpensive prints to fill the empty space or whip up your own abstract art.

A small rug woud liven up the room and make it look cosy.

The ledge is perfect for frames and the backwall can be decorated with DIY wall tapestry.

I hope this helps 🙂 Take care 😊 Aiva

    1. Thanks so much for all the help, Aiva! Yes, I definitely think I’m either going to get a print or do a DIY tapestry one of these weekends to hang above the bed. 🙂

  4. Grace, I love this little space you have created! I really like the lights around your bed and can picture maybe another painting propped on that cute ledge. What about a cute faux fur throw rug in the middle of the room? One that would be all cozy for floor sitting? And I like the idea of your pom pom strands for wall decor. Thanks for sharing and linking up!

    1. Thanks so much for the ideas, Shelbee! And oooh a faux fur rug would be super fun! Thanks for stopping by.

  5. How frustrating there are no lights in the ceiling! that would really annoy me. I think your room looks nice but a rug would be cute, and that little ledge is just calling out for more photos! 🙂

Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup!

    1. Thanks so much for the input!! I know, I think a rug would really spice it up a bit. I hung little photos on three twine banners above my bed and it looks so cute.

      1. I’m thinking of updating this post, but I honestly haven’t added much still! Haha

      2. Let me give some suggestions? You could turn the bed so it’s not to the wall. Also you could add a bookshelf and/or a little stand up mirror… books just transform a room!
