July 2020 Monthly Round-Up

I was pretty absent from the blogging world last week (which felt so good), but I’m excited to get back into things this week and to catch up on my longggg to-do list. I know everyone has already said this, but I just can’t believe it’s August! July lasted a really long time for me, in the best sort of way, and I’m not ready for the summer to start winding down yet. There’s still so much to do before I head back to school in September!

Fashion

There were a lot of outfits I really liked from July (like my farm chic look), but I think I’d have to say my favorite outfit was the white top and mustard pants I wore for my Raiding my Mom’s Closet blog post. I just loved the effortlessly chic vibes of the look and was really happy with how the photos turned out!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that I spent this past week learning how to sew from my aunt. It was soooo fun, and I’ll be sharing more about the experience in an upcoming blog post. But something my aunt helped me do is tailor the pants I’m wearing in today’s outfit! I ordered these fun palazzo pants from Francesca’s a while back but I’ve never worn them. They’re too big in my natural waist (one of the woes of having hips) and it wasn’t worth it to me to go through the hassle of returning them. So there they sat, in my closet, never worn… Until now! I took these photos before tailoring the pants, so you may notice a bubble of fabric in the back. The wide belt at my waist was meant to keep the pants up! But needless to say, I’m very happy that these bold, colorful pants now fit like a glove and that I’ll actually be able to wear them. I already have at least five outfit ideas! Hehe, so exciting.

Favorite Purchase

Even though I said in last month’s round-up post that I was going to do some shopping for basic pieces during July, I never did. I browsed a lot this past month for closet staples like a denim skirt and high-waisted jeans, but ultimately nothing jumped out at me. However, I did receive some hand-me-down shoes from a friend! One of the pairs are brown lattice peep-toe wedges, sort of like these, which I’m very excited to style come fall. The other pair are cream and black block heels that are a little dressier and would look great with a work-chic outfit!

Hair and Beauty

I’m starting to feel like this is a rather boring round-up post… I didn’t do any shopping, nor did I try anything new with hair or beauty. I honestly didn’t even get dressed that much this past month, mostly staying in my workout gear all day. The only new product I tried that I can think of are these macaron body soaps from Trader Joe’s. My mom bought them for me for Christmas and I’ve been saving them (I’m one of those people who has a hard time using stuff and instead “saves” it for no particular reason—ya feel?). I already used the Raspberry macaron, which smelled good, and now I’m using the Lavender Honey bar. You guys… I have no idea why it’s labeled Lavender and Honey, since it smells like neither of those scents, but the bar does smell SO good. It’s honestly kind of a manly smell, like a hint of musk or something, but I love it so much. Would definitely recommend if you’re into guys wearing aftershave or whatever, ’cause it smells like that. Mmmm.

Books, Movies, and TV Shows

Okay, now we’re finally getting into the good stuff… On top of spending two weeks of July volunteering for a virtual camp and one week learning how to sew, I still managed to spend a TON of time watching movies and TV shows. On the flip side, I didn’t really read at all, aside from my own journal I wrote last summer during the Camino. Here’s the list of everything I watched in July!

  • Perks of Being a Wallflower on Netflix: I know this movie is super old, but I still had never seen it before. Honestly… I was let down. I had heard great things and thought it would explain some of the woes of high school (lol) but it left me wanting.
  • Troop Zero on Amazon Prime: This movie about a band of misfit girls forming a girl scout troop was super cute. It had a bit of a slow start, and it wasn’t the completely heartfelt movie I was expecting, but I still really loved it and would recommend it. The ending performance was AH-mazing. Let me know if you’ve already seen it!
  • “Unsolved Mysteries” on Netflix: I watched two episodes of this but was just so annoyed with the fact that the mysteries are unsolved that I decided watching it wasn’t worth my time.
  • “13 Reasons Why” on Netflix: I honestly don’t know why I keep watching this show (I finally finished the fourth season). It’s just so dark and depressing, but I felt the need to see it through to the end. Thank goodness it’s over now!
  • “Reckoning” on Netflix: I binged this serial killer TV show with my parents and it was just okay. It was entertaining enough, but I wouldn’t recommend it as it had a lot of plot holes and wasn’t the best story.
  • “The Bold Type” on Hulu: Y’all know how much I love this show since I did a whole post on Jane Sloan’s style. I finished the most recent season this past month, and I have so much to say about how it ended! Let me know if you’ve seen it and we can discuss…
  • Desperados on Netflix: This rom-com was pretty dumb—would not recommend.
  • Shackleton’s Captain on Amazon Prime: This acted-out documentary tells the amazing true story of an expedition to Antarctica in 1914 (I believe) that went horribly wrong. It was such a fascinating story and a really good docudrama!
  • “Black Mirror” on Netflix: My dad and I have been binging “Black Mirror” and are almost finished with the series. I didn’t think I would like the show, as I went a little overboard with dystopian/sci-fi stuff in middle school, but I actually really enjoy watching “Black Mirror”. The episodes make you think and call attention to such fascinating issues in the digital age. So many of the episodes focus on the negative effects of social media, and the story-lines are extremely disturbing! I highly recommend that all fashion bloggers, influencers, and social media gurus watch the episode “Nose Dive”. It is an eerily accurate depiction of social media.
  • “Sex Education” on Netflix: I LOVE this show and was so excited to watch the second season, which I binged with a friend over Zoom during virtual movie nights. The show is hilarious, and I can’t wait for the third season to come out!

Quote of the Month

My quote for July was, “To live is the rarest thing in the world; most people just exist,” by Oscar Wilde. This quote seemed particularly fitting for quarantine, as the days can drag on and life suddenly seems very monotonous. I wanted to spend the month doing a little more living, even while at home, but I admittedly forgot I had chosen this quote for July! Oof. Hopefully I am more mindful of my quote in August.

Last Month’s Goals

My two goals for July were to A) grow my Instagram following from 825 to 850, and B) grow my blog following from 398 to 415. I am SO excited to announce that I far surpassed my Instagram goal this month! I actually reached 850 followers on July 9th, and I ended the month with 928 followers! Such growth, and I could not be more proud of myself. I also reached my 415 blog follower goal a few days ago. June was previously my best performing month ever, but July far surpassed it. Here’s to an even better August!

This Month’s Goals

For August I just want to continue focusing on growing growing growing. My Instagram goal is to finally hit the big 1k, and my blog goal is to get to 430 followers. Wish me luck!

I can’t believe what a busy month July turned out to be, and I know I’ll only be busier in August! Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to being super productive in this new month. I accomplished so much in July, both for my blog and in my personal life, so I’m excited to carry that momentum into August (especially now that I have my new academic Passion Planner to help me reach all my monthly goals!). What are you looking forward to in August? And what were some of your favorite items/movies/shows from the past month? Leave me a comment below and let’s chat!

As always, thanks so much for stopping by today.

    1. Thank you Emily!! The only downside is that they get pretty static-y… ugh, that’s always so annoying.

    1. Thank you Michelle! And yes, me too. I’ve always wanted to learn and I’m so glad I finally have a few basics up my sleeve!

  1. These pants are so awesome and you look gorgeous! Love this outfit! I am excited about getting some stuff done in August but also about trying to get back to my roots of budgeting: been spending too much! And I need to work on growing my instagram! Haven’t moved much in the past month!

    1. Thanks so much, Mireille! And getting back on track with your budgeting sounds like a great August goal. Instagram is tough – but engagement really does breed so much engagement! That’s what I’ve been learning these past few months.

    1. Thank you so much Jill!! I sure don’t know much about sewing yet, but I know enough to get me started and that’s SO exciting! I was ecstatic to be able to fix these pants (with the help of my aunt, of course).

  2. Isn’t it great to “rediscover” an item of clothes that you couldn’t wear, when they’re altered so that you can? Fab outfit. Congrats on growing your Instagram – it seems very hard to make progress there. Thanks for joining #WowOnWednesday.

    1. Thank you so much!! And yes, it really is exciting to rediscover an item. I can’t way for all my future outfits with these pants!

  3. Now after just reading about your style thoughts in the previous post, I just want to say that these pants are the bomb!! THE BOMB!! Totally fun and totally chic! Just like you Grace. Wear them often and you’ll not regret it. You also won’t regret knowing how to alter things. It’s such a needed skill.

    1. Thank you so much Jodie!! I already have so many outfits planned with these pants, hehe. It makes me so excited!

  4. They are such great pants and I like that top with them, perfect colour combo! It’s so good you’ve been able to alter them so you don’t have to worry about wearing a belt with them all the time.

Congrats on exceeding your follower goals too! 🙂

Hope you had a great weekend! Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup!

    1. Thanks so much, Mica! Isn’t the color combo really fun?? I was worried it wouldn’t look as cute in person as it did in my head, but I’m glad it does. 🙂 Hope you’re having a great start to your week!

  5. Grace, this outfit is so amazing! I love the print on the pants, the gorgeous teal top is so good on you, and that belt is magnificent. I am so happy that you learned some sewing skills, too, to alter the pants. My mother was teaching me how to sew years ago before she passed away and I never quite got comfortable with more than sewing a straight seam or making very minor repairs. And now I don’t even have a sewing machine anymore. But it is such a great skill to have! And congrats on your blog growth! It is super exciting to hit those milestones! Thanks so much for linking up with me!

    1. As always, thank you so much for such a sweet comment, Shelbee! I am sorry to hear about your mother. I still hardly know anything about sewing, but even just getting a start is so exciting to me! Thank you for stopping by!
