Today I am so excited to team up with the Magnificent 8 once again, a group of seven bloggers and myself from across all generations, to share how we style heirloom pieces. When we decided on the theme of today’s blog post, I immediately had the perfect items and outfit in mind, so I can’t wait to finally share my look!

The heirloom pieces I decided to style today are these beautiful clip-on earrings and the matching brooch, both of which belonged to my grandmother. My grandma was the most stylish woman I’ve ever known. Not only did she rock a bold red lipstick and sassy red sweaters into her old age, but she was always dressed impeccably (and impeccably on trend, I might add) in every vintage photo I’ve seen of her. Hair done, makeup on, and a gorgeous dress or jacket to get her through her long, tough work days.

My grandma was my number one blog supporter, and almost every time I would come downstairs after getting dressed in the morning, she would give me some sort of compliment on my outfit. I loved having fashion in common with her! One of our favorite pastimes was watching “Say Yes to the Dress” and discussing what we liked and disliked about the various gowns. When I first bought my prom dress, I came home and gave her a fashion show immediately—one of several from over the years. My grandma loved the purple dress, and as she always used to say, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it!” That would make me giggle every time.

For my 20th birthday, my grandpa decided to give me this matching set, as well as a few other pairs of clip-on earrings that belonged to my grandma. I’m the only girl out of my cousins and extended family who doesn’t have my ears pierced, so I’m the only person for which it makes sense to wear her old clip-on pieces. As it turns out, my grandma wore clip-on earrings into her 40s, which is when she decided to get her ears pierced instead. I wonder what motivated her to finally do it!

When people find out my ears aren’t pieced, they’re usually surprised. To be honest, it’s never really been something I’ve thought a lot about. My ears aren’t pierced and that’s just the way it’s always been. Funny, then, that I had finally been considering piercing my ears right before my 20th birthday, as a sort of way to initiate the new decade of my life. As you may have suspected, after my grandpa gave me all these clip-on earrings, it made me inclined to never get my ears pierced so I could forever wear my grandma’s pieces proudly.

So that’s the beauty of heirlooms. Every time we get to wear an heirloom piece, we get to tell a story of who wore the piece before us. In this way, we keep our family members’ memories (and their style) alive from generation to generation. Should I have my own daughter one day, I hope to pass on to her all of the jewelry I own that belonged to my grandma. I will tell her what an incredible woman my grandma was and that my daughter should wear my grandma’s pieces very proudly. I know my grandma would love my outfit today and this old-fashioned style dress! And I wear her brooch and earrings (and a bright bold lipstick) in honor of her.

Do you own any heirloom pieces or any very special items someone has passed down to you? I invite you to share your story in the comments below. It’s beautiful how something so mundane like a pair of fashion jewelry clip-on earrings can suddenly become so important and meaningful. You know how people ask you, “If your house lit on fire and you had five minutes to get out, what would you take with you?” I often think that I would ignore my wallet and instead head straight for the invaluable pieces hiding in my jewelry box. What items mean the most to you?

  1. Oh, Grace. I love the story about your grandma…heck, I could probably be your grandma!!
I am shocked you don’t have your ears pierced. But you could change out the clip on earrings to magnet ones to make them more comfortable.
And that brooch!! I just love brooches lately, especially on my denim jackets.

    1. Thank you so much Jodie!! And oh please, I’m pretty sure my mom is older than you. 🙂 You’re right, maybe I should switch out some of the clip-ons… Some of them are surprisingly comfortable though! Such a pleasant surprise. Also, I have been obsessed with brooches lately as well. They’re just so chic and look especially great on the collar of a jean jacket, as you point out. Have a great rest of your week!

  2. I too love the story of your grandmother Grace and would love to see some pictures of her. You have styled her pieces perfect and your outfit would have made her proud. You have inherited more then her jewelry, you have also inherited her style and grace. Thanks for the wonderful story about your relationship with this inspirational woman.

    Stay stylish & smiling,
    Lesley

    1. Thank you so so much for your beautiful comment, Lesley! Have a wonderful rest of your week. <3

  3. Grace, I got all choked up reading about your grandmother! She was a very special woman to you, for sure. What a beautiful tribute to her with your words and your stunning outfit! I love this whole look from head to toe. You are so very beautiful, my friend, and your grandmother would be very proud! And now that you are 20, I really need to update that collage graphic. I will have it finished before our next collaboration! I also shared about my grandmother on today’s post featuring one of her (and my) favorite hand made shawls! This was such a fun theme!

    1. I agree Shelbee, this was a great theme! Probably my favorite so far. Thank you so much for your sweet words. I’m about to go read everyone’s posts now and I can’t wait to see how you styled your shawl. 🙂

  4. I have some of my grandmother’s jewelry and should wear them more often. Growing up abroad didn’t see my grandparents very often, every couple of years until I moved to California when I was 18. I have some sweet memories of her and my grandoa! Like yours she was always put together. I have a fun picture of both of us in our bathingsuits, i was 12 she was in her 80s😃

    1. Aw, that’s such a sweet memory Mireille, I love that you have a cute photo of the two of you together! Thank you for sharing. <3

  5. What a lovely way to remember your grandmother and all of the special moments you two got to share! Once I moved to Ireland I didn’t get to see much of my grandmother and it would be amazing to have a little memory of her in a form of jewelry – something I could wear on those special occasions! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful part of your life and have a good day 😀 Aiva

    1. Thank you so much for such a sweet comment, Aiva. I’m sure you have several other special ways to remember your own grandma. 🙂 Have a wonderful rest of your week!

  6. You can still wear clip-on earrings even if you get your ears pierced. I got my ears pierced in 25 and it was not painful at all. Getting a shot hurts more.
