3 Quick and Easy Hat Hairstyles

Happy Friday! I’m so thankful it’s the weekend finally… The first week back at school is always so stressful, and on top of that, I have a cold now! Ugh. BUT I’m excited to share 3 super simple, super fast hairstyles to rock under your favorite beanies this winter. I love wearing beanies when it’s cold outside, but I don’t love looking like I don’t have any hair underneath the hat – you feel? And if I choose to wear a hat, it’s probably either because a) I’m lazy, or b) my hair is dirty. So I’m definitely not going to have gorgeously curled locks flowing from my beanie, like you see all over Pinterest. That’s why I rounded up these three easy hairstyles, which take less than 5 minutes to complete and don’t require shampoo! Let’s get started.

Hairstyle #1: Dinosaur Braids

Step 1: Start with your regular ol’ hair – no need for it to be clean, curled, or anything else (although brushing it is probably a good idea).

Step 2: Gather at least 8 tiny hair rubber bands. Depending on how long your hair is, you may need more.

Step 3: Part your hair down the middle. The best thing about wearing a hat is that you don’t have to worry if the part on the back of your head is straight or not! I always hate the mystery of an uneven back of the head.

Step 4: Split your hair into two sections, and tie them off into pigtails right behind your ears.

Step 5: About 2 inches down, add another rubber band to each pigtail.

Step 6: Continue adding rubber bands down the length of your hair, being sure to leave at least 2 open inches of hair at the bottom of your pigtails.

Step 7: Using your fingers, pull apart each section of hair in between the rubber bands so that they get all poofy. Then throw on your favorite beanie, and voila! A super cute (and unique) hairstyle to show off that you do, in fact, have hair beneath that hat. I don’t know why I call these dinosaur braids… I guess it reminds me of a dinosaur tail? Or the spines on their backs? I know I’m weird, ok.

Hairstyle #2: Faux Fishtail Braids

Step 1: Follow all the steps to complete the dinosaur braids from the first tutorial. So you should start with poofed-up, sectioned-off pigtails, for lack of better words.

Step 2: With the top section of one of your pigtails, use your fingers to create a “hole” in the middle of the section. Then pull the rest of the pigtail through the hole, as seen in the photo above.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 with the other sections of your pigtails, pulling the entire pigtail through the middle of the section to create a twisted look.

Step 4: Put on a cute a hat and call it a day! I love this form of pigtails because it looks way more complicated and time consuming than it really is. Fishtail braids are beautiful, but I can never get them to look right – not to mention they can take a really long time to do. This twist-through method is the perfect alternative for those of us who would rather sleep in than spend that extra time on hair (who’s with me?).

Hairstyle #3: An Interesting Side Braid

Step 1: Part your hair wherever you like (I prefer a side part for this hairstyle), and pull all of your hair into a side ponytail, using a small hair rubber band.

Step 2: Taking the ends of the ponytail, pull the ponytail up and push it through the hair above the rubber band, pulling it down. This will leave a pretty twist, as seen above. And if that description was confusing, it’s the same twist-through method used in Step 2 of the Faux Fishtail Braid Tutorial!

Step 3: Section off a third of the hair in your ponytail, and braid it normally. Tie it off with a small hair rubber band.

Step 4: Incorporate the small braid into one larger braid. (So, use the small braid as a third, and separate the “free” hair into two sections. Braid all three of these parts together.)

Step 5: Put on a cute beanie and get on with your day! I love this braid because of how simple it is and how cool it looks. Much more interesting than a normal braid but still requires no effort.
