Billy the Puppet Halloween Costume

Halloween costume, Billy the Puppet, Saw movie

Okay y’all, I am PSYCHED for today’s costume tutorial!! As I already mentioned, last week’s David Bowie costume was not super well-received…but I know this Saw costume will be a real winner! Ok fine, you’re right, it would be much better with a little red trike. But we gotta make do, ya’ know? Saw is one of my favorite movies, so I was excited to finally try out this costume. I considered going as the iconic puppet character last year but opted for the glam of Audrey Hepburn instead. Do you like Saw or have you even seen the movie? And now for the most important question… Do you want to play a game?

Face Paint Tutorial

Obviously, this costume is all in the face paint… Face paint can be really hard and requires a steady hand, but if you can master it, your Halloween costume choices are endless!

  1. Wash your face and make sure it’s completely dry.
  2. Apply brown or black pencil eyeliner to your top and bottom waterlines.
  3. Completely cover your eyelids with black eye shadow. I chose to extend the eye shadow into my entire eye socket because I don’t have face paint that is safe to use in the eye area. I do think it would look better, however, with eye shadow on the lids and below them but not quite as extended as I brought it. You could use white eye shadow in the rest of the eye sockets, or if you’re feeling bold, you can just use white face paint near (but not on) your eyes!
  4. Finish off your eyes with mascara (even though you likely won’t even be able to see it).
  5. Paint your entire face white (I highly recommend this face paint and discussed it in more detail in this post). Be sure to bring the paint into your hairline and along your jaw to completely cover the face. I could have done a better job bringing the paint into my hairline, but I had just washed my hair and knew it would be a pain to get out! When it comes to the mouth area, it’s up to you if you want to extend the red lipstick beyond the lips (so that the face paint doesn’t get too close to your mouth) or if you want to paint it as close to your lips as possible. I drew an outline just outside of my lips and painted to that point.
  6. Paint the red spirals on your cheeks. Not surprisingly, this was the most difficult part of the process. Be sure to use a small paint brush, and I recommend dragging the paint brush down rather than trying to pull the paint upwards, if that makes sense. The nice thing about face paint is that it easily blends, so if you mess up, don’t fret! Just go back afterwards and cover the mistakes with white.
  7. Finish my adding the black lines to make the puppet mouth (I wish mine were slightly thinner) and top it all off with a bold red lipstick! Say hello to Billy for me.

What to Wear

In the movie Saw, Billy the Puppet wears a black suit with a white button down and a red bowtie. If you don’t have all of those items (I sure didn’t), here are some alternatives for what to wear:

  • A white t-shirt, tank top, or sweater
  • A black blazer, a black cardigan, or a black pleather jacket (like me; it adds a nice BA vibe)
  • Black jeans, a black skirt, or black shorts with white/black tights underneath
  • A red ribbon instead of a bowtie or a red fabric belt (like me)
  • Black heels, sneakers, or booties

To Spice It Up Even More…

If I were to wear this costume again, here are a few additional things I would add to make the costume that much better:

  • Paint your nails a nice glossy red.
  • Fill in your eyebrows super dark (even though technically Billy the Puppet doesn’t have eyebrows).
  • Part your hair down the middle and straighten it (or curl it, if you want a cutesy look).
  • If you really want to go all-out, add some red contacts! Or carry around a chain with a fake foot attached. Ya’ know, it’s the little things that really make a costume.
