I keep telling myself that I should go shopping one of these weekends to update my spring wardrobe. Most of my closet is filled with greys and blacks, and with the weather warming up (maybe? It started to hail when I was taking these pictures…so don’t mind the snow in my hair!), I’ve been craving bright yellows, blues, oranges, and pinks. But until then, I have to make do with what’s already in my closet, mainly, fall colors. I figured I’m probably not the only one in this situation, so here are few tips for transitioning those dark tones into the warmer months.
Wear Sandals. Duh, this is a no-brainer. Sandals instantly make the cremes, burgundies, and olive greens of my autumn skirt more spring appropriate by sharing my toes with the world. Wedges are another great shoe choice because the straw bottoms (I don’t know what to call that material) exude beach and summer vibes.
Throw on a Denim Jacket. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: nothing screams spring like a denim jacket. Even though white wouldn’t look good with this particular outfit, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a white denim jacket to be even springier (if that counts as a word). Had I paired this outfit with the olive green military jacket from this post, however, the look would only be appropriate for fall.
Color Your Lips. I chose to add a bright pink lip gloss (by Elizabeth Arden, featured in this lip gloss review) to this outfit to brighten the mood. I think a dustier pink shade would’ve been better with this particular look, but you get the idea. A light shade on your mouth can brighten your face and add the final touch to a spring outfit.
Add Crochet or Lace. Like a denim jacket, crochet fabric has a special ability to transform anything into a spring look. This lacey crème blouse contributed the perfect texture to make the outfit loose and breezy, since the skirt is more of a stiff canvas material.
Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking. Like the cliché line from the movie The Devil Wears Prada, florals are groundbreaking for spring—at least, they’re useful for turning an otherwise autumn outfit into something more spring appropriate. Even though my skirt has a floral print, I also added a pretty rose gold flower necklace and two brightly colored flower pins in my hair. I think the hair accessories really pushed the look into spring mode.
Paint Your Nails. Of course, it helps when your nails aren’t painted a dark purple color, like mine were in these photos…Having bright pink, yellow, sky blue, or even white nails can add that one extra detail to elevate your spring game.
