Feeling Blue (But Only In My Hair)

Today I’m talking about Loreal Paris’ Colorista Spray, which is 1 day hair color. I’ve been wanting to try this kind of temporary hair color ever since it came out and finally got around to it during spring break. I’ve never dyed my hair before, but if I ever wanted to, temporary color like this is a great way to test the waters and see what kind of styles/colors I like. So without further ado, here are my thoughts on this 1 day hair color. (Sorry that it didn’t show up great in these pictures. Figures.)

I am wearing the color #BLUE300 (unfortunately, it doesn’t have a fun name like nail polish does). The only directions given on the can are to place a towel around your shoulders, shake well, spray 4-6 inches from dry hair, and wait a few minutes to dry.

I started with both a towel on the floor beneath my feet and a towel around my shoulders. It was difficult to spray it onto my own hair, so I had my mother do it. At first she did a few long streaks down the length of my hair. After waiting ten minutes, the color didn’t appear any darker or dry yet. The dark blue didn’t really show up in my hair, and while it no longer appeared super wet, it still rubbed off at the touch of a hand.

We decided to go back to the drawing board. I ended up putting my hair in a bun, even though I initially wanted it down to showcase the blue. If you do leave your hair down, I would recommend curling it. This was my original plan but I ran out of time—the blue streaks in my natural hair just looked kind of odd and messy. In the end, I chose to tie my hair up mostly because I was worried about getting the color on my clothes.

I then had my mom spray more blue into my hair once it was already put up. I think a combination of getting too close and spraying too much at once caused the very blue streak around my part (as seen four photos up). The texture of the spray is not soft or shiny like the pictures on the can lead you to believe. Rather, the color is rough and dry, like a lot of hairsprays. As you can imagine, this texture was especially bad in the section where I sprayed too much.

Ultimately, I was not happy with how my hair turned out and disappointed in many ways. Half of these reasons were my own doing: I should’ve curled my hair from the start, I should’ve just left the streaks instead of adding more (or picked an easier style to do with the color, like a dip-dye look), and I should’ve done smaller streaks so it would look less like a mistake (the big blob of blue at my part seemed like an accident).

However, I also had problems with the product itself. The color did not dry very well. Even at the end of the day, the color still rubbed off onto my hands after touching it. (By the way, I ran a comb through my blue streak to see if that’d help spread the color. It didn’t work, but it did get blue all over my comb, which was rather hard to get off. It took a lot of soap and hot water to remove the color from my hands and hair tools.) Even though I want to try this hair product with my hair down, I would worry about getting it on my clothes. The color also did not wash out with one shampoo; it says on the can that the blue might last longer in blonde hair, but obviously, I do not have blonde hair. It took 3 washes until I finally couldn’t feel the texture anymore and it felt completely gone from my hair. Another thing I noticed—which was very strange and kind of gross, so bear with me—was that my boogers were blue. I went to blow my nose, and out came blue. I’m sure that can’t be good…

I am not a hair expert by any means, so I’m sure half of the battle was just me not using the spray correctly. I actually bought two cans—this blue one and a rose gold one—for $10 each, so I plan to try it again. Hopefully next time I’ll have a better sense of what to do and how it works. When I use the blue again, I think I just have to accept that it won’t be that vibrant in my hair. At the end of the day after I took out my bun, I kind of liked the subtle graying/greenish streaks that remained. And I’m hoping that the lighter rose gold shade will show up more in my dark hair.
