The Most Impractical Styles in Fashion

With New York Fashion Week happening right now, it seems that every big blogger and her sister are sharing their experiences and videotaping the runway shows for all to view on Instagram Stories. While this is all very fun (and I’d love to be at NYFW if I could), I’ve never understood how most fashion shows and the high-end fashion world involve so many un-wearable pieces. Most of the stuff you see in shows is just not practical. That’s what is confusing about fashion—anyone should be able to attain it since we all get dressed in the morning, yet the high-end fashion industry is anything but made for the average person. Anyway, with that in mind, I’ve rounded up a list of the most impractical styles in fashion (in no particular order), just for giggles. 😉 I hope you enjoy!

Off-the-shoulder anything. So cute and such a big trend the past few seasons, but come on…How do you lift your arms? What if you have to fix your hair? I would definitely feel like a penguin, waddling around with my arms close at my sides all day.

Strapless anything. Similar to above, but possibly even worse? I think strapless dresses can be really pretty, but not many people can pull them off confidently. It’s hard to move around, and at dances (like Homecoming—check out last week’s posts here and here) girls often wear strapless dresses but then can’t actually dance. Plus, a lot of people then become self-conscious and slouch to make sure the dress stays on. Not a good look.

Backless Tops. Okay, so spicy and can be really pretty, but what kind of bra do you wear?? I feel like all the cutest styles make it really hard to wear a bra (like these, or cool strappy shirts, or halter-necks). No bueno.

Clutches. Clutches are essential to a chic night-out look, but they can also be an essential annoyance. You basically only have one hand every time you use a clutch.

Suede Shoes. Guys! This one really gets me. I have a lot of suede shoes, and I love them, but you have to be SO careful when you wear them! You can’t get suede wet so that means…no wearing them when it’s raining, when it’s snowing, or when there’s a chance of puddles on the ground. That narrows down a lot of options, especially for suede boots. Plus, it’s such a big trend that the majority of shoes in the store are suede. I promised myself I wouldn’t buy anymore of this material, but it’s so hard when there’s nothing else to choose from…

White pants. White pants are really fresh, super cute, and go with everything…EXCEPT that weird piece of food that you just sat in. I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. I own one pair of white pants and love them, but I don’t wear them very often.

Mules. I don’t know if “mules” is the right term, but I’m just talking about any heel that doesn’t have a back. 1. It makes it super hard to walk, and 2. your foot snaps around and makes weird noises. Again, no bueno.

Rompers. I’ve always wanted to try a romper and think they’re stylish for summer, but I just don’t like the idea of going to the bathroom in them. What a hassle.

Pants with Fake Pockets. This is SO annoying!! So many pants have those silly little stitches that make you think there’s a pocket. If you’re gonna bother putting in a fake pocket, why not just make it a real one?!

Lace-Up Shoes. I have an old pair of lace-up flats (you can see them here) and the trend is still going strong, especially with sandals. I love the ballerina look of tying up some ribbon, but it never ends up laying right and the knots often come undone. It’s frustrating that my shoes never look as stylin’ as the pictures. Tsk tsk.

What did you think of this post?? It was really just an excuse for me to vent about all the annoying fashion things that I want but know aren’t worth it. 😉 I’m sure I forgot a lot of items, so if there’s something you love but hate because of the functionality, leave a comment below!
