Maxi Skirt Mayhem

As part of my school’s dress code, we have to wear maxi skirts once a month…I don’t know about you, but a maxi skirt isn’t generally something I reach for. That doesn’t mean I don’t like them, they’re just not my first pick, and I’m very picky about the ones I do like. So with that in mind, I thought I would round up ALL of my past posts with maxi skirts for a little inspiration (I thought there would be more, but there only ended up being five!).

I actually do love maxis for the summer—they’re so airy and comfortable. They also make great travel wear! One of my favorite ways to wear them is with a simple camisole/tank top and dainty jewelry. For school though, a cute military jacket or anorak would work to cover those shoulders (modest is hottest, as we know).

Even if I did just LOVE maxi skirts…ones that fit are kind of hard to find. Maybe it’s because I’m short? I’m not that short though…Plus I just don’t like a lot of the ones they have in store. Lots of times they have really loud, unflattering prints and feel like t-shirts. I prefer a little more structured fabric for my skirts and pants—cotton shows everything!

To me, maxis seem more of a summer thing because I always wear sandals with them. But in the winter?? It’s kind of hard to find cute shoes that match without looking like a religious person or someone from the 1800s. That’s why I stick with sassy little booties! Anything with some edge—like a block heel, studs, or interesting fabric—will spice up the look and keep you modern. Plus, I always stay away from black maxi skirts! They verge too close to nun status.

Last year I tried wearing a sweater with a heavier knit maxi, and I really loved the result! I will definitely have to do it again this year. If you try this look, I recommend using a thinner sweater so that it doesn’t create bulk when you tuck it in. And yes—you have to tuck that sweater in, or at least a half tuck! Doing so will make your legs look really long and give you more of a shape by hiking the skirt up to your natural waist.

What about you?! Do you wear/like maxi skirts? Which outfit was your favorite? I’d love to know. 🙂 Have a great Wednesday!
