B2S Series: Collar Decorations

As I mentioned in last week’s post, I attend a high school that requires us to wear collared shirts. Most of the time, this doesn’t bother me—I’ve grown to like having a weird flap of fabric tightly wrapped around my neck. However, collar after collar after collar can get a tad boring…So for all you button-down shirt aficionados, or those ladies who like to dress up/have one of their first day jobs, this post is for you.

So what are some ways to dress up a plain collar? Let me just tell ya how ‘bout.

Statement Necklaces: As I mentioned last week in my first collar appreciation post, I absolutely love wearing statement necklaces with collars. You just pop that colla’, fasten that necklace, and pull the colla’ down over the necklace. That simple. You can check out a few posts where I did that here, here, and here.

Earrings: Earrings are just so versatile. Studs work in your ear, in a cork board as a cute pin, in your annoying brother’s hand…But for real, stud earrings can be really cute used as pins in your collar. Slightly bigger ones work best, and then you just pin them symmetrically on each half of the collar. Voila! Instant glam.

Clip-On Earrings: Which bring me to today’s post! Whoo! I am wearing clip-on earrings from Charming Charlie in these photos. Basically it’s the same situation as stud earrings above, except these ones don’t make any holes in your fabric. 🙂

Pins: Also similar to the above two options, you could just rock a totally artsy pin on one side of your collar and go for a cool asymmetrical look. I especially love those brooches with dangly parts.

Collar Clips: If you’re really fancy, you can buy one of these super unique (and old fashioned) collar brooches (I have no idea what they’re actually called). Mine showed up in my stocking at Christmastime last year. They’re really cool because it’s basically two pins that are connected in between with a pretty chain, and they connect the two halves of your collar. Ribbon: I have never actually tried this (not yet, at least!), but I’ve seen some people tie a long black ribbon underneath a collar and into a bow. This is a very preppy style, but then your top looks like one of these pretty tie-neck blouses.

That’s it lady! Those are my ideas for spicing up an ordinary collar. What do you think? Would you try any of these ideas?

By the way, I’ve worn this outfit to school before (thus the collared shirt, covered shoulders, and old lady Bermuda shorts). When I took these photos, it was way too hot outside…but this outfit is perfect for my classrooms because my school is always freezing! If you’re wanting to create a similar look, all you really need is a solid colored collared blouse (say that 10 times fast), neutral colored shorts or pants, and a pop of color in the shoes. With, of course, some sort of collar decoration from above. 😉
