Why You Should Wear a Short Dress to Prom

Hello! Having had attended prom two weekends ago, I thought it’d be fun to share some reasons for why you should wear a short dress instead of a long one to your next formal dance/gala/other fancy event. Let’s get started!

They’re oftentimes less expensive. This isn’t always true, but short dresses can be a lot less expensive than long dresses because they have way less material and there is a greater demand for them.

You’ll stand out. In a dance floor full of long dresses, showing a little leg can really make you stand out in the crowd. Plus, the chances of you wearing the same dress as someone else are much slimmer since most people will be shopping in the “gown” department.

It’s easier to move around. Again, this isn’t necessarily true, but lots of long dresses tend to constrict your range of motion in your legs and hips, which are very important for dancing! Short dresses will allow you to move at least your shins/feet with more ease.

You don’t have to worry about height. There are two major issues regarding prom dresses and their long length: they’re usually so long that you have to get them hemmed (what a hassle, and it adds more money onto the cost of your dress) or you have to wear super tall heels to keep the dress from dragging on the floor, in which case you are uncomfortable the whole night. Wearing a short dress prevents both the time/money spent hemming and the necessity to wear uber-tall heels. Short dresses also mean that…

You get to show off. Yes girl, show off your spicy legs in a short dress! Haha. Or, more importantly, show off your super cute shoes and pedicure. Long dresses often cover up these details!

You can easily re-wear short dresses. I think this is the most important reason, especially considering that my whole blog is about re-wearing items and affordability! Long dresses make it hard to find another event to which you can wear them; they only work for very specific occasions, and if you can’t find another reason to wear them, it could mean hundreds of dollars down the drain. Fancy short dresses, on the other hand, can be worn to dances, weddings, Easter/Christmas/New Year’s Eve, banquets, a nice dinner, and the list goes on. Versatility means you’ll really get your money’s worth out of a dress.

Have I convinced you to wear a short dress yet?! Obviously, I wore this mint/light teal dress to prom, and it was perfect. I was comfortable and never had to worry about my dress getting dirty on the floor (or worse—getting stepped on!), and now I plan to wear it next week to a fancy event. Of course long dresses are still super fun to wear; these are just my ideas for breaking the prom status quo. 🙂

Hope you enjoyed this post! Would you wear a short or long dress to a formal event? I’d love to know!

Miles of smiles,

Grace
