Maxi Skirts: Cute or Not?

For me, maxi skirts have always caused a dilemma. I think they can be cute (I’ve worn them here, here, and here), but you have to take care in styling them to make sure you don’t look religious/super modest (not saying those are bad things, just sometimes it’s not the look you’re going for). So I thought I’d share some tips for how to make a maxi skirt look cute and not nun-like. 🙂

I wore this look while in Vegas to do touristy things and walk around town. This was the first time I wore this skirt, and it was also my first purchase from Hope Ave Boutique (super cute store, by the way). At first I wasn’t sure I liked the maxi because it seemed a little too religious for me, but after some consideration of what to wear it with and encouragement from my mom, I decided to get it. I’m so glad I did because I love it now and I got a ton of compliments! Some people actually thought it was a dress. 🙂 Okay, on to some tips!

Wear something a little more revealing. I am definitely not the scandalous type so that’s not what I mean, but pairing a maxi skirt with something like a tank top or a shirt with an open back takes away from the modest look without being inappropriate…Really what you want to avoid is being covered from head to toe. I would usually recommend no turtle necks with a maxi, but I totally broke that rule here (my school made us wear long skirts with collars! What?!).

Avoid buns. No, I’m not talking about butt cheeks. 😉 A great way to avoid the nun look is to wear your hair down or in braids or in a sassy high ponytail. Basically, wear it any way you like as long as it’s not in a bun. (But to be completely honest, I’ve broken that rule before as well…)

Try sandals. I feel like nuns and other religious people often wear sneakers or “nurse shoes” with their long clothes. Avoid this by wearing sandals (or cute booties in the fall and winter). Personally, I think it would be very hard to pull off the athleisure look with a maxi, so just make it easy and let your toes see the light of day.

Incorporate a “cool girl” item. Things I would consider “cool girl” items: ear jackets/cuffs, layered jewelry, midi/toe rings, aviator sunglasses, anything with studs or (p)leather, etc. Adding one (or more!) of these will definitely distract from any nun vibes because they show you are fashionable, modern, and on trend.

  1. Reblogged this on By the Mighty Mumford and commented:
I PREFER TO SEE MAXI SKIRTS OF FLORAL PATTERNS OR SOFTER PATTERNS, MYSELF! CUTENESS DEPENDS LITERALLY ON WHAT ONE WEARS TO GO ALONG WTH THEM—SOME TOPS AND PATTERNS WORK BETTER THAN OTHERS,. IF THE SKIRT’S PATTERNED, THEN I PREFER A SOLID COLOR BLOUSE OR TOP,

  2. A good mix of applications here–good! As I stated my opinion in the reblog statement, some combinations work better than others…but that’s just my opinion! 🙂
