5 Tips for Styling a Plaid Skirt

I know I’ve said this on the blog before, but I have usually stayed away from plaid skirts because they remind me of a school-girl uniform. Does anyone else ever feel this way? If so, then this post is for you! This skirt was the perfect one to buy since it’s designed to be a mini skirt and is form-fitting—not your typical school-girl look. So let’s get started!

Pair with something trendy. A great way to escape the school vibe is to pair your skirt with something trendy, such as my fringe suede booties. A trendy item will break up the iconic school-girl look and make your skirt more modern.

Wear with something modern. Is there a difference between trendy items and modern items? I feel like it is a fine line. Perhaps trendy items are those that last for a season or two and modern ones last for years. I don’t know. Regardless, pair with something modern, like my baseball tee (it has crochet detailing on the sleeves), to add an unexpected vibe and make it less uniform-like.

Consider fabrics. I think considering fabrics is super important. I chose a knit, comfy top versus a stiff, structured blouse to add visual interest and avoid the button-down look of a classic uniform. You could still pair the skirt with a structured/collared blouse, but I would pick one with a unique detail or pattern to mix it up a bit.

Add layers. I went to a school with a uniform for many years, and I was never allowed to wear any extra layers/accessories. So this is the perfect way to escape the school-girl look! You probably wouldn’t wear a blanket scarf in a classroom over a white button-down top, so accessories like that are perfect. Some sort of vest or cute belt would also work for this tip.

Don’t forget the hair. Hair can have a big impact on an outfit. I was just trying to think of a typical school-girl hairstyle, and I realized one is pigtails, which I’m wearing a form of…so, that was a fail. But honestly, I still think my Dutch braid pigtails work because those are such a “cool girl” hairstyle (at least according to Pinterest!) and they don’t feel school-ish. What do you think?

I wore this outfit to school (shocker) but I could picture it on a coffee date or for wearing to the movies.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope these tips helped convince you that you can look cute in a plaid skirt. I wish you all a great week!

Miles of smiles,

Grace
